Topic of the Month: Amputation of the Leg

With the ageing of populations ad the increasing prevalence of cardiovascular risk factors globally, the number of major lower limb amputations is expected to rise.

Despite new developments in diabetes mellitus treatments, modern innovations in endovascular therapies, and the improvement of amputation prevention programmes in many countries, rates of lower limb amputations have not fallen.

Amputations remain a significant healthcare and socioeconomic burden. This chapter aims to summarise the up-to-date peri- and postoperative management of patients undergoing major lower limb amputation.
