ESVS Annual Meeting: Academic Workshops Overview
ESVS Annual Meeting
Academic Workshops Overview
Aortic Pathway – Led by Zoran Rancic
OPEN WORKSHOPS
This year, there are many workshops on the treatment of aortic disease. There are two workshops on open aortic surgery that you will surely enjoy: Open AAA Basic as well as Complex Open AAA.
The basic workshop is excellent preparation for the FEBVS exam as it covers all aspects of infrarenal aortic repair.
The complex AAA workshop will cover all aspects of handling juxta/para/suprarenal as well as thoracoabdominal aortic aneurysm repair followed by important tips and tricks needed for such delicate surgery (including safe suprarenal / supraceliac / thoracic aorta clamping and renal/visceral reconstruction). Learning these techniques is becoming increasingly important as in this endovascular era, the number of these procedures is decreasing.
In both workshops, expert and renowned faculty will give their advice from everyday practice, on how to improve your basic and complex open vascular surgery skills.
ENDOVASCULAR WORKSHOPS
In addition, there are many hands-on endovascular workshops. The whole aorta will be covered, ranging from the aortic arch to the iliac arteries, from basic, all the way up to advanced skills.
You can learn to plan and size the EVAR step-by-step. Basic endovascular skills will be covered in the EVAR Step-by-step workshop, where you will be able to deploy abdominal stent grafts.
If you need more advice on how to resolve a problematic distal landing zone, then How to Manage the Distal Landing Zone in EVAR (IBD) is just the right one for you. Implanting TEVAR in the elective setting is also very important for vascular surgeons to have in their armamentarium and the Elective TEVAR workshop will cover all important theoretical and practical aspects.
For the more experienced vascular surgeons, there are also more advanced workshops to attend. If you want to learn more about treating complex aortic aneursyms: juxtarenal, suprarenal and thoracoabdominal, then start with workshops such as Essentials in FEVAR, Essential in BEVAR, and Off-the-Shelf Solutions for Hostile Neck such as ChEVAR. In those workshops, you can learn details related to planning, procedural steps and material used.
With the introduction of new devices, the aortic arch is also one territory more frequently treated by vascular surgeons and for this, attending Endovascular Treatment of Aortic Arch will be the right workshop to gain more skills and learn some important tips and tricks.
Carotid Pathway – Led by Claudia Schrimpf
During the Annual Meeting in Belfast, the ESVS Academy organises mostly hands-on workshops and the Carotid Pathway includes three such workshops.
These will be delivered by an international team of leading experts in the field. The entire scope of treating patients with carotid artery stenosis will be covered during these workshops.
INTRAOPERATIVE QUALITY CONTROL AFTER CAROTID ENDARTERECTOMY
This is a new workshop this year. Completion imaging is broadly used after endovascular aneurysm repair or lower limb revascularisation (open and endo). Despite that different methods for completion imaging after carotid endarterectomy are available, we are still facing the same question: “to use it or not?”.
Reduction of stroke and death with CI was demonstrated in a systematic review and meta-analysis of 34 studies. Same database reports show that “rare performers” made more unnecessary re-explorations, then causing more neurological events Hopefully more education and sharing experience from routine users of completion imaging after CEA could increase its compliance in the vascular community. In this workshop, you will be able to perform completion ultrasound on a model with performed CEA and discuss interpretations of its findings with experienced key opinion leaders.
CAROTID ENDARTERECTOMY
If you need to prepare for the FEBVS exam, the hands-on workshop on carotid endarterectomy might just be the right workshop for you. During this workshop you will not only refine your skills on patch plasty, but you will also have the opportunity to practice shunting during carotid endarterectomy.
You will be guided by expert surgeons, to give you tips on how to perform the endarterectomy with minimal risk for your patient.
CAROTID ARTERY STENTING
The carotid artery stenting is an emerging treatment for carotid artery stenosis.
The procedure however can be technically demanding, as there is not much room for mistakes due to the risks of the procedure. This is an advanced-level, simulator-based workshop during which you will be guided through the procedure step-by-step.
The workshop includes the entire process of carotid artery stenting: from navigation through the arterial tree to the placement of the stent. Also during this workshop, experts will guide you through the procedure and will not only give you tips and tricks, but also make you aware of the pitfalls that come with this procedure.
