ASSA DISTINGUISHED SERVICE AWARD 2009

The award

The award is to recognise individuals in the surgical fraternity who have provided exceptional service to surgical patients and to the community over a long period with particular emphasis on the aspect of selfless contribution. It is directed at the unsung heroes of the profession.

Criteria

The following criteria will be considered for this award:

  • The ward is directed to people who have distinguished themselves in surgery.

  • In addition they must be of high standing in the community and must have given significant contribution to the community. Emphasis will be on community issues, either to the medical community or the community at large.

  • The incumbent must be in good standing with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA).

  • Any person can only receive the award once.

  • Eligibility for the award is not restricted to ASSA members.

Nomination

Nomination will be by a proposer and a seconder. The proposer and seconder must either both be ASSA members or one of them should be an ASSA member. Both must append their names on the nomination form. The motivation should make it clear that the incumbent is of high standing in the community and there must be independent evidence of this. Examples of selfless contribution to the community must be given in the motivation.

Judgement and announcement

The award will be judged by the ASSA executive committee. It will be given at the Biennial ASSA congress and the announcement will be made at the Congress banquet.
